There are only 24 days left to get your digital submissions in to the York Art Association for the 42nd Annual Open Juried Exhibition. The prospectus is available by clicking here.
This year’s juror is Robert Cozzolino, Senior Curator and Curator of Modern Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts:

A champion of underrepresented artists and uncommon perspectives on well-known artists, Dr. Cozzolino has been called the “curator of the dispossessed” for his attention to the underdog.

Acceptance into the exhibition will be by review of digital submissions; award jurying will be done after the selected artworks have been delivered to the York Art Association for the Exhibition installation.

  1. re: 42nd Annual Open Juried Exhibition. Any suggestions about photographing sculpture?

  2. Hi Judy, good question. Be sure you have plenty of light all the way around and from as many angles as you can. If you have a very bright but shaded spot outside, shoot outside. An overcast day would be even more ideal to be out under clear sky. This will provide diffused, even lighting.

Be sure that you have a neutral background with no distractions. White, black, or a neutral grey matte board or foam core would work great; or a neutral fabric. You may have to experiment depending on the sculpture.

Have your camera set to “Auto” white balance unless you are able to and know how to set a custom white balance on your camera. You still may need to adjust for color / white balance after your initial capture, but this should get you relatively close to start.

If it is a large sculpture, you may include a close-up detail shot as well, but there must be a full view image. If a free standing sculpture, find something neutral and non-descript to use as a pedestal; if a wall sculpture, hang on a wall to shoot.

If you have a tripod, it is always best to use it to avoid camera movement, especially if your shutter speed is less than 1/125 of a second.

    Hope this helps.
